Telling my First-Time Story at Bawdy Storytelling!

I did something I've never done before and told the story of my first time as a call girl at Dixie De La Tour's Bawdy Storytelling! Although it was in front of 250 people (ack!!), everyone was super nice. I didn't barf, I didn't fall down, and everyone clapped at the end. So I consider it to be a huge success!

A couple of my fellow storytellers are comediennes-- they were talking about needing to be on stage, how it makes them feel so alive. I needed valium to get through the day, and had an out-of-body experience while on stage. Which isn't to say I didn't enjoy it, and, objectively, I know I did a good job.

But the next day, I felt like I'd been hit by a truck. My body was telling me: I really, really, REALLY didn't want to do that, and you held me down and made me do it anyway. Today, you pay.

I think the interesting thing I learned walking away from this experience is that old Hollywood trope that all every wallflower needs is their triumphant moment as a star to blossom into a star just ain't right. Some of us get fed by being on stage-- but for folks like me, it's draining. Just part of who I am.

Anyway-- it was gratifying to get through it, and maybe I'll try it again some day.
