Here’s a taste:

In Thriving, I identified five demons in sex work: fear, shame, low self-esteem, anger, and envy. You may be curious why sadness didn’t make that list. Sorrow, in my opinion, is very a different animal. Fear and anger, while vital to keep us safe, are states of mind we want to experience no more than absolutely necessary. Shame and low self-esteem serve no purpose whatsoever—we’re a whole lot better off without them. And unless envy is kicking our butts to get us something we want, learning to accept ourselves with gratitude is a far better way to live.

The thing about sadness, though, is we experience it even in the midst of joy and satisfaction. A world without sadness would mean children never grow up; friends never land groovy new jobs and move away; our bodies neither age nor die. Life under glass, with no air to breathe—we would all be suspended in time.
