Personal Finance: Mini Book Review: The Total Money Makeover: A Proven Plan for Financial Fitness by David Ramsey

In writing Thriving in Sex Work: Sex Work and Money, I read dozens of personal finance books. This blog series consists of reviews of books I think sex workers could benefit from. I’m aware, however, that nearly all personal finance books aren’t geared towards the specific issues sex workers face. So I’ve done my best to provide a down-and-dirty roadmap of what to expect— the good and the bad, and why I think any particular book might be useful to you.

The Total Money Makeover: A Proven Plan for Financial Fitness by David Ramsey

I recommend this book to:  Anyone who needs a crash course in debt reduction, this book is straight-to-the-point and useful.

However, be warned: You will require a high tolerance for quotes from Scripture.

Action Verbs: Paying down debt, savings, credit management

Key Takeaways: Debt = Bad. Don’t hold debt, any debt, ever

Heartfelt to Practical Ratio: 1:10

Strengths: No nonsense, clear messaging. If you follow his advice, you will get out of debt.

Trigger warnings: This book is solid practical information delivered in a highly polarizing style. Ramsey projects a Big Daddy Energy that often crosses over to Big Swinging Dick, spouting off about the fundamental differences between “men” and  “women” that can get pretty cringey.  He is a white, straight Christian male, not suitable for everyone. Also, assumes, like most money books do, that the reader has a regular employee job with benefits, bonuses, etc.
